In a Television
interview Dada J.P. Vaswani, The Spiritual head of the
Sadhuvaswani Mission , clearified certain issues regarding
the Meatless Day Campaign. "How did the meatless
day campaign originate ?" he was asked. He said,
Sadhu Vaswani was a voice of the voiceless ones, the
dumb defenceless children of God, who alas, are being
slain by the million in our soulless cities everyday,
"O the sin of daily slaughter in our cities"
he exclaimed. And he added words with which many may
not agree. But he spoke with the foresight of a seer
when he said, "Beleive me the day is coming when
meat eating will be condemned as murder!" he also
said "I have seen God's image shining in birds
and animals, and for me not to love birds and animals
would be not to love the Lord!". On one occassion
he even said "Take my head but pray go and have
slaughter houses closed!". One of Sadhu Vaswani's
devotees who lives in America (New Jersey) Mr Bob (Bali)
Gurbani, suggested that November 25, the birthday of
the humble, holy man of God, this saint who pleaded
for mercy to all living beings, be observed year after
year as International Meatless Day. We have been doing
so for the last 15 years.
Q. It is Difficult to understand
what connection could there be between not eating meat
and world peace ?
A. Meat eating and world peace appear to be poles apart.
Actually the two are interlinked. So long as animals
and birds are slain to provide meat for man, so long
we will not see peace on the face of this earth. If
a man kills an animal for food, he will not hesitate
in killing his fellow-man, who he considers his enemy.
The root cause of world wars is irreverence for life.
Dr. Albert Schweitzer who was awarded the nobel Prize
for Peace, urged that there will no peace until we educate
our people to grow in reverence for life. reverence
for all life. Until we have reverence for life we will
not be able to abolish wars. It is only through a shared
reverence for all life that the dream of world peace
can be turned in to a realizable goal.
Q. I am told that you have
raised your voice in favour of animal right. Do you
think that animal have rights?
A.Men and Women have their rights: do animals
have no rights? The time has come when all animal lovers
should come together and formulate a charter of Animal
Rights and a charter of man's duties towards the Animal
Kingdom. Animals must be given certain Fundamental Rights.
And the very first right of every animal is right to
live. We must not take that which we cannot give. Since
we cannot give life to a dead creature, we have no right
to take away the life of a living one.
There is also much weight given by raw foodists to the
giving up altogether of cooked food in any form. This
raw food diet truth that is growing in awareness among many who are turning toward
this positive healthy mode of eating is becoming easier to
understand. It is obvious really, since raw foods contain all
the nutrients and goodness they came with that are not destroyed
by the cooking process. Food for thought, certainly!
